Castle of Mesen / メゼン城, Lede, Belgium

Castle of Mesen was built in 1749 as a noble residence for the Marquess of Lede. After the noble family left the property, a Catholic institution bought it in 1897 and used it for a important social event. 

From 1914 to 1970, the castle was used as a boarding school for girls, who were daughters of men in the military after the WWI. The school was closed in 1971.

I think the demolition work had already started partially when I visited in 2010, but it was barely standing even before the demolition. The partial demolition completed in 2011, and the remaining buildings were demolished in 2015, except for a small part of the main facade, which is displayed in the park.

メゼン城は1749年にレデ侯爵家邸宅として建てられました。侯爵家が城を離れた後、1897年にカトリック教会団体に売却され、重要な社交行事に使われました。

1914年から1970年の間は、第一次世界大戦で戦った軍人の娘達の全寮制女子校として使用されました。学校は1971年に閉鎖され、城は廃墟となりました。

私が訪問した2010年にはすでに解体工事が部分的に始まっていたようですが、解体前からほとんどの建物が崩れかけている状態でした。2011年には部分的な解体作業が完了し、2015年には本館正面部分を除いたすべての建物が解体されたようです。本館正面部分は公園で公開されており、自由に出入りできるとの情報を見かけました。
